Meetings and Events

The current meeting location is Local Works, 1926 N. 4th St., Suite #9, which is located in the alley to the right of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on 4th St. Meetings are normally held at 6:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month. There is a business meeting, a demonstration, a show and tell gallery, and a fund-raising raffle at each meeting. Please join us in this great hobby!

September

Tuesday, September 12, 6:30PM: This meeting will be at Local Works, 1926 N. 4th St., Suite #9. Bring a favorite turned piece, either yours or someone else's that you admire, and we will discuss it.

David Dr. Jim Beaman from Tucson will offer a day-long workshop for club members. The workshop will be the same on both days to accommodate more members. Jim will give hands-on instruction turning reverse curve bowls.

Tuesday, October 14, 6:30PM: This meeting will be at Local Works, 1926 N. 4th St., Suite #9 Don Jovag, a member of the Southern AZ Woodturners Association and author of Segmented Bowls for the Beginning Turner wil demonstrate making a jig for a table saw that makes it possible to cut segments with enough precision to avoid complicated sanding and fitting. He then will demonstrate making a segmented bangle bracelet

David Dr. Hans Finsterwalder will offer a day-long workshop for club members. The workshop will be the same on both days to accommodate more members. There will be a short demo and then hands-on instruction using Carl Smith's 6 mini-lathes. We will be making spider boxes.

A kind of pine or Christmas tree. He says it will be appropriate for folks who use up trees all the time.

A good chance to share gouge techiques, etc. Members please bring your own sharp tools.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 11, 12 and 13: Hands-on. One evening demonstration, and two all-day hands-on sessions will be held in Steve's shop. All members are welcome to attend the Thursday demo. Members may sign up for either hands-on day (Friday or Saturday but not both. There will be a $20 fee which includes lunch. Robert Rosand a nationally recognized woodturner, teacher, demonstrator, and writer will demonstrate and then teach us how to make lidded boxs.

Saturday, May 20/21: Hands-on. Two all day training sessions will be held in Steve's shop. Members may sign up for either day but not both. Phil Stivers www.philstivers.com who is on the woodworking faculty of Palomar College will teach us how to make globe ornaments with delicate finials. We will use the tools we created in February and March.

Saturday, March 26, 1:00PM: Hands-on. This meeting will be held at Steve Van Ooteghem's shop, 3503 W. Kiltie Loop. The second of two hands-on tool making meetings in preparation for a class in May. We will make handles for the two scrapers which we made at the February meeting. Please come even if you weren't at the meeting in February because handle making is good basic spindle work

Saturday, February 26, 1:00PM: Hands-on. This meeting will be held at Steve Van Ooteghem's shop, 3503 W. Kiltie Loop. The first of two hands-on tool making meetings in preparation for a class in May. Carol Reed will guide us in making two scrapers which we will use to fashion a globe ornament with a slender finial in May.
